Yeast

What is Yeast?

Yeast infections, also known as yeast vaginitis, monilia or candida, are caused by an overgrowth of fungus, usually Candida Albicans, in or around the vagina. Women normally have a small amount of fungus like Candida and other bacteria in their vaginas. Yeast infections occur when something causes the candida to grow too much or the bacteria to grow too little. 75% of women will have a yeast infection at least once in their lifetime. Certain things may trigger a yeast infection, such as:

  • Pregnancy
  • Birth control pills or other medications that contain estrogen
  • Antibiotics
  • Steroid medicines
  • Diabetes
  • Douching
  • Too much heat and moisture around the vagina (wearing synthetic underwear, bathing suits)
  • Not washing and drying the genitals on a daily basis

What are the Symptoms of a Yeast Infection?

A woman may have some or all of these symptoms.

  • Thick, chunky, white vaginal discharge
  • Irritation and redness of the skin
  • Itching
  • Pain with intercourse
  • Burning during urination

Ways to Prevent Vaginal Infections

  • Wipe front to back with toilet tissue instead of back to front. Avoid colored or scented toilet tissue.
  • Avoid scented or deodorant pads and tampons.
  • Do not use douches unless directed to do so by your health care provider.
  • Avoid vaginal deodorant sprays.
  • Take a bath or shower every day. Use soap without perfumes or deodorants. Avoid using bubble bath and perfumed bath oils.
  • Flavored condoms and lube can sometimes cause yeast infections.
  • Dryer fabric softeners can leave fibers in clothing and may cause irritation.
  • Wear loose fitting pants. Avoid layering clothing. Wear cotton, silk, linen or wool whenever possible – don’t wear polyester, nylon and rayon for long periods of time. If you must wear panty-hose, wear them for the shortest possible time.
  • Avoid wearing wet bathing suits for long periods of time. Change underwear and workout clothes right away after exercising.
  • Do not wear underwear while sleeping. Let your skin breathe.
