What is The Vaginal Ring?

The vaginal ring (NuvaRing) is a form of contraception through a flexible, rubber vaginal ring. It is used to prevent pregnancy with a combination of progestin and estrogen. The ring is inserted into the vagina and release a continuous low dose of hormones into the body for three weeks. It is then removed for a one-week, ring-free period.

How Does The Vaginal Ring Work?

  • thickening cervical mucus prohibiting the sperm to enter the uterus
  • thinning the lining of the uterus causing it to be unsuitable for a fertilized egg

Disadvantages of The Vaginal Ring

  • does not protect against STIs
  • possible side effects, including vaginal infections and irritation, mild headaches, spotting in between periods, nausea, vaginal discharge
