Abstinence simply means no sexual intercourse.
Since the penis (and, therefore, sperm) does not enter the vagina, pregnancy cannot occur. Abstinence may also call for staying away from any sexual activity that leads to an exchange of body fluids including genital to genital rubbing and other sexual contact such as oral or anal sex. Particularly if you are concerned about the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Moderately to highly effective depending on use. Abstinence can be 100% effective if you’re true to the method. But remember that sperm can still find its way into the vagina if ejaculation takes place close to the entrance of the vagina. It’s also a good idea to have a barrier method handy just in case your willpower fails!
